The Department of Orthodontics deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of irregularities in teeth, jaws and face structures. The main purpose of orthodontic treatments is to obtain a good closure by ensuring that the teeth in the jaws are aligned regularly and that these teeth are in tune with the teeth on the opposite side. In addition, orthodontic treatments aim to provide an ideal aesthetic and to improve functions such as smile, chewing, speech and respiration.
Variable orthodontic devices are used to prevent irregularities (malocclusions) that may occur in the teeth, jaws and face regions, to stop premature malocclusions and, if they have, to correct these malocclusions. With these devices applied to the mouth and out of the mouth, the irregularities and broken jaw associations can be corrected, irregularities of the lips-and-mouths are rehabilitated, and orthodontic treatments can be performed before and after the operation of orthognathic surgery patients. The duration of orthodontic treatment usually ranges from 1 to 2 years. This process can be even longer when the need for tooth extraction, the application of orthopedic devices for the correction of jaw relations, and the presence of congenital jaw-facial deformities are present.
During orthodontic treatment, it is difficult for patients to resume oral hygiene due to orthodontic appliances such as brackets and wires in the mouth of the patient. In this process, if the patients do not show sensitivity to oral care, decay may occur, the gums may become inflamed and some teeth may need to be extracted after treatment. For this reason, patients who wish to apply for our orthodontic examination may be examined at our department after completing the existing dental procedures.
In our department there are 2 faculty members with the title of Assistant Professor.
Orthodontics specialists are planned to be trained in our department of theoretical and practical education in the 4th and 5th years of undergraduate education of dentistry and in the graduate education in the period of specialization in dentistry.
